Flash Photography : Shooting A Music Night With Off Camera Flash

Flash Photography : Shooting A Music Night With Off Camera FlashFlash off the camera, finally I took my flash off, I have owned the Speedliter’s Handbook by Syl Arena for a while but I finally put some of his ideas into practice.

I was shooting a music night one of the local pubs in Beverley. The room was quite light but where the performers were was not so bright at all.

Normally I would place my speedlite on the top of the camera and just swivel the head about and bounce the light off something but I wanted to try something different.

For this event I was shooting with a ,  prime lens, a  and a wireless trigger set.

My flash was manually set up, as I did not have a light stand I found a nice location where I could put and began to set my exposure and also the power of my speedlite.

There was a some ambient light but I wanted to factor in the detail that you could see through the window so I metered for that and then used flash to light what was happening inside the bar.

Give the fact I was determined to try and shoot the night this way I never made any changes to my shutter speed or aperture. I shot the whole night on F2 and with 1/125 at 1600 ISO.

I moved about the venue and shot various pictures, some worked and of course some did not. However as the main light source was not tethered to me I was delighted with various types of pictures I was able to achieve on a very basic set up.
