Sports Photography : Shooting Football With A Canon EF 400mm f2.8L USM

Canon EF 400mm F2.8L USM was the lens used for this sports photography shoot featuring Beverley Town Football Club and Sculcoates Amateurs.

The Canon EF 400mm F2.8L USM was mounted to with exposure being set manually.

For some time, I have been using the Canon EF 400mm f2.8L USM lens, mainly for cricket but more recently to shoot amateur and professional sport.

Given the size and weight of the Canon EF 400mm F2.8L USM I always fix it some sort of support, in this instance, I used a .

So to summarise, the equipment used for this job was;

The light was very good. It was pretty much a clear summer’s evening, so I could set the aperture on the Canon EF 400mm f2.8L USM Lens to f/4 at the start of the shoot.

The venue presents its own challenges, as cricket is played at the same ground, there are big white sight screens dotted about the pitch. As a rule, I like to shoot and control my exposure manually so the screens were never caused me any problems.

Given the light, I was easily getting shutter speeds of 1/2500 with the an ISO at 800. If you have used a you will know that there are no noise issues at ISO setting of 800.

As the match progressed and sun dipped I began to open the Canon EF 400mm f2.8L USM Lens to around f/3.2 and as the light changed again I started to increase the ISO to 1600, as the light faded more I slowly reduced the shutter speed to 1/1000 to get the exposure I liked.

Although the gives back great results at High ISO I still do not like to shoot about an ISO setting of 2000. With sports photography, you need a fast shutter speed in order to freeze the action.

In order to keep the camera shooting fast enough to achieve the desired results I tend to try to move around the pitch and shoot into the brighter areas, then as a last resort when the light is too low I start applying ISO.

Below are a few sample pictures taken during this match using a and Canon EF 400mm f2.8L USM Lens complete with the settings used.

As with all my photo’s there is no post production, they are right out of the camera and uploaded to the internet.
